Mountaineer Alan Hinkes has joined Carnegie Great Outdoors on the first of this year's Side by Side Challenges, a coast to coast walk following the Hadrian's Wall path. Carnegie Great Outdoors, part of Leeds Met, and the RFL are hoping to raise more than £30,000 for the RFL Benevolent Fund by hosting this challenge and a second, the Yorkshire Three Peaks, next month.
Participants come from the entire rugby league family. Students, supporters, members of the community game and partners of the sport will rub shoulders with former players, members of the media and representatives from professional clubs with experts such as Alan Hinkes showing them how it's done. Alan, from North Yorkshire, was the first Britain to climb all of the world's 8,000 metre peaks.
The Hadrians Wall path is 84 miles stretching coast to coast, starting at Bowness-on-Solway and finishing at Wallsend. It follows some of the UK's most beautiful countryside past Roman Forts and across Northumberland National Park. The group are aiming to complete the challenge in four days, compared with the usual six.
A second challenge, the Yorkshire Three Peaks, will take place next month and involves walking approximately 25 miles and taking in over 5,000 ft amid the spectacular scenery of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, incorporating Pen-y-ghent (2,276 ft), Whernside (2,415 ft) and Ingleborough (2,372 ft).
This is the third year Leeds Met and the RFL have held outdoor challenges to raise money for the RFL Benevolent Fund.
