Episode 1 of Misacorp's 2 in 1 Minecraft Tips and Tricks will teach you the following:

1) How to build a simple "water net" that lets you fall as high a distance as you want and end up on dry land without taking any damage. Perfect and elegant for getting down into mines!
2) How to make a floor or ceiling out of smooth stone without actually smelting anything!

@jmosler9 I have no idea why they come out so dark on YouTube. They're fine when I render and watch them and the audio levels are high enough, but when I upload them here they become much darker and the volume is cut in half.

@Misacorp try encoding it differently, i used to have the same problems. google will find you plenty of youtube friendly encoding procedures.

@Misacorp You could also use signs, instead of ladders because ladders get in the way but signs dont
