It is quite apparent that the presenter doesn't understand agriculture let alone supply management. Simply put there are barriers to entry in every market it cost 1 million to start a Tim Hortons franchise. Furthermore, it costs just as much capital to start a grain farm, hog farm or beef operation that would give you the same amount of profits as a supply managed farm and none of those markets are steady.

The tax payers do not spend money on keeping this system going. Purchasing the quota is all in the farmers hands. We as poultry and dairy farmers have faith in this system as it guarantees us to have a good price for the products we produce. This enables us to keep farms small and produce good quality products. Even if the quota goes, I strongly believe that the price in the store will hardly go down, instead of giving the farmer a fair price, the middle man will make more profit.

You pay more for your milk because you are actually pay the REAL value of the milk... Farming is extremely expensive and thanks to the milk marketing board we are able to have a system that ensures that the farmer gets paid what he or she deserves..... With regards to "ma an pa" farms this system has allowed Canadian farms to stay small because you do not have to take advantage of economies of scale to stay competitive. Look south and see what happens to dairy farm numbers...
