Bruyneel was never going to be a threat for the overall race.It was all about gaining time on his other bigger rivals. In that sense Indurain never asked for or expected any help from Bruyneel,he treated his presence as irrelevant. Bruyneel deserved the win for being the only one who could stay with Indurain. He knew he would be in yellow for only a day and so did Indurain wh took it back the next day.
