Water crisis looms in occupied Golan Heights - 13 Jul 08

Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian President, has asked for help from his French counterpartsin any possible direct talks with Israel.

Technically, the two countries remain at war since Israel occupied the Golan Heights in 1967.

The Golan is a valuable fresh water resource, but it's under environmental threat, and as David Chater reports, that may put any political settlement under threat.

Israeli should stop stealing resources from the occupied territories. This is no different when Israel dumps raw sewage or trash in the Palestinian areas. actually I read that syria had actually taken most of the golan heights illegally from the partition plan that was to go to the new jewish state. so technically, israel was just taking back the land the UN had promised when it took it in 1967.

I understand the point you are attempting to make, and Israel has a bad track record of land grabbing. We agree on that for sure. However, to respond to your point about high ground. Syria is a third rate POS military with no hope of successfully penetrating Israeli airspace with planes, hence eliminating the usage of bombs. Missiles, while an option, are terribly expensive for the amount of damage each unit potentially causes, hence artillery barrage is their only real option vs. Israel.
