In the final moments of the 1995 Daytona 500, a caution for contact between Robert Pressley and Dick Trickle set up an 11-lap shootout for all the marbles.

Under the caution, Dale Earnhardt decided to gamble. Well aware of how strong Marlin's car had been, Earnhardt came down pit road and took on four fresh tires as well as a strip of tape over his grille to increase downforce.

Earnhardt would line up 13th on the restart, stuck behind not only the 12 leaders, but also several lapped cars including Jeff Gordon and Bill Elliott.

The clip begins on that final restart with Sterling Marlin still in the lead.

Ken Squier, Ned Jarrett, and Richard Petty have the call for CBS.

  • Apparently Trickle wrecked because he was trying to light a cigarette

  • A dotted white line where the double-yellow "out-of-bounds" line is now? When did NASCAR put in the yellow line (a single line until 2009)?

  • Thank you for that nice footage!
