Professional saxophonist Dr. Boyd Phelps, DMA, suffered multiple strokes during the last year. The strokes severely damaged his music skills, robbing him of the ability to play or understand music. He is relearning music skills by forming new music pathways in his brain. Through his determination, daily practice and study, and frequent acupuncture treatment, Boyd is finally able to play music again. He still has a long way to go but his prognosis for full recovery is excellent.
This is a video of Boyd's return to the bandstand on July 26, 2011 at Tula's in Seattle. Boyd is former lead alto saxophonist of the Stan Kenton Orchestra, and currently founder and leader of the jazz quintet "Boyd Phelps' Sax Attack!" (www.SaxAttack.com). The band has been marking time awaiting his recovery for a year by playing once a month at Tula's without him. This week, Boyd "sat in" for a few tunes with his band just to test the waters, and he soared!
Boyd's acupuncturist is his wife Linda, who specializes in performing arts medicine at her community acupuncture studio Purple Dragon Healing Arts in Seattle. Acupuncture is highly effective in stroke rehabilitation. Acupuncture treatments should begin as soon as possible after stroke onset.
Ken Kassover, the pianist in Boyd's band, was instrumental in guiding Boyd's music recovery. Ken is a neuropsychologist who applied his expertise in brain function and jazz music to help Boyd retrain his brain to play jazz. How cool is that?!!
