They've been composing music under the subgenres: extreme metal, gothic metal and symphonic black metal. They were never black metal and currently refer to themselves as extreme metal musicians. Get your genres right.

@satanspattywagon666 You are what's wrong with the music industry. You shouldn't hate a genre. Music is music. You may like it, and you may not like it, but it is a creative outlet for the artist. Do not hate someone for expressing themselves.
