Part 3

December 8th, 2008
Wiltern Theater, Los Angeles
"That is the real deal, Demi! She's in this room, right here, this is Channel 5 News. We are so excited because we are gonna have an interview with Demi Lovato today, DEMI LOVATO. She is at the Wiltern Theater, I'm reporting live. Back to you, Ron."
Demi sat in front of her dressing room mirror. She picked up another limp lock of brown curls and heavily sprayed it with her European hair spray. The female reporter was seated comfortably behind her, ready to start the backstage interview.
"What's it like being famous?"
"Well, you get a lot less sleep."

"How is the relationship with your dad now?"
" I don't speak to my dad. But I have a great stepfather. He raised me my whole life and he is my one father. I saw my biological dad a while back, but the reunion wasn't as happy as other people might have made it out to be. And that can be painful."
The reporter tilted her head slightly—not at all ashamed to ask such personal questions.
"Tell us—is this romance with Joe real? Are you two dating?"
Demi forced a laugh.
"Joe's like a brother to me. They all are. I'm so blessed to be surrounded by such amazing boys."
The reporter signaled and the camera-man turned off his equipment. She leaned closer to Demi.
"The camera's off, Demi. You gave us the scripted answer about the brothers. Aren't there any secrets you're just dying to spill? After all, they can't be as perfect as they seem. They must slip up sometimes, right?"
Demi instinctively pulled back and caught a glimpse of the reporter's camcorder, which was partially hidden in the pocket of her blazer. It only took her a second to realize the reporter was lying! Whatever she said was being recorded under the guise of casual conversation.
Demi's mind flitted back to the present. "Well," she began slowly. "Of course they aren't perfect. We all make mistakes."
She paused, and the reporter urged her to go on, her eyes big with excitement.
Demi drew out her words for dramatic effect. "Sometimes Joe is really bad." She paused, trying not to laugh inside. "Sometimes—he 'forgets' to go to bed before 11. And get this—he doesn't always brush his teeth!"

She stepped on stage. The colorful lights were so bright that she could hardly pick out the individual faces in the exuberant crowd. Her band stood in their places, with bowed heads, waiting for her queue. Hurridly swiping the beads of sweat off her forehead, she strode quickly to the center of the stage. At her signal, a guitar was brought.
As the base intro begin, she wondered what she would say.
"Normally, every time I do this song I give a little speech. But tonight, all I have to say is—I loved you." She glanced across the crowd. "And—I won't forget.
As she sang, she let herself be caught up in the emotion and feeling of the song. She sang for herself, for Cody and her relationship with him that was no more. She sang for her real dad, and let her heartfelt pain ebb at the lyrics until they rose and fell with the emotions she felt. She sang for her childhood friend who had died too young, and she sang for Joe and what would never be.
She finished the last line--accapella-- forcing herself to swallow the growing knot in her throat. The spotlight followed her as she walked slowly off the stage and into the comforting darkness beyond.
