Doug Barry of the group Radix talks a little bit about the moral implications of artificial birth control.

So many people think that their own way is better than God's way and that they know what is better for their lives more than the creator of the universe does. But when you look at society today and all of the divorces and other sad things that are going on, it is clear that God knows what is best for us and we should follow his plan. Such is the case with contraception. Many people who call themselves Catholic choose to ignore this teaching of the Church. But as I have said before, picking and choosing which teachings of the Church you want to follow gives every other Catholic the right to do the same thing (see our discussion entitled Being 100 Percent Catholic http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=212541452118470). Like I always say, the Catholic Church is not a decider of truth, but more of a proclamer of it. God is the one who decides the truth, and it is the responsibility of his Catholic Church to uphold it. So let us investigate a little further why it is that the Catholic Church teaches that contraception is sinful.

The first fact that I would like to share with everyone is that, until 1930, all Christian denominations agreed with the Catholic Church's 2,000 year old teaching that contraception was immoral. Luther, Calvin, and Wesley were all opposed to contraception. The Anglican Church was the first to allow contraception, which led to many other denominations falling over like dominoes and allowing it as well. The Catholic Church is the only church that did not cave in when society told it to get with the times and start allowing contraception. So if you are a Christian that belongs to a church that teaches that contraception is morally acceptable, let me ask you a few questions. Can God change his mind? Does the will of God change as the morals of society change (Mal 3:6, Hebrews 13:8)? And if contraception truly is moral, then how can you justify belonging to a church that taught that it was not acceptable less than 100 years ago? How can you justify belonging to a church that can teach incorrect things on faith and morals? Is it possible that your church is also teaching other false things on faith and morals? Jesus gave his church the power to bind and loose (Matthew 16:19, 18:18), but would Jesus bind and loose in heaven what is bound and loosed on Earth if his church was capable of teaching error? The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ and therefore incapable of teaching error on faith and morals and will not suddenly change its mind on an issue just because society changes its mind.

So why is contraception immoral? Let us begin by talking about the most popular form of contraception, the birth control pill. Allow me to very briefly explain how the pill works. The pill works by sort of tricking your body into thinking that it is already pregnant. An egg does not drop and therefore cannot be fertilized. But sometimes this does not work and an egg drops anyway and gets fertilized by the sperm. Well, the pill has a back up method for when this happens. The pill also thins the walls of the uterus and does not allow the egg to implant, so pretty much the fertilized egg just gets washed away. But we should know as Christians that God does not choose to breathe a soul into a person when the baby pops out of a woman or even when the baby develops a heartbeat, but at the moment of conception. This is why abortion is wrong. Scientifically, we know that one characteristic of something that has life is that it grows, and a baby begins growing at the moment of conception. Most people are probably unaware that many forms of the pill are not just contraception, but abortifacients.

There are also many side effects of using the pill, such as high blood pressure, weight gain, strokes, increase risks of some forms of cancer, depression, and a great many of women have fertility problems after getting off of the pill. The birth control pill is the only pill that people take when something is not wrong with their body. It is like you are telling God that he made a mistake in designing you and you will fix his error.

  • wow yes a world without condoms perfect, i suppose we would be hitting the 10,000,000,000 mark by now and all be starving to death

  • These are the things that need to be said, thank you, and may God Bless you!

  • @100PercentCatholic So you are celibate bachelor? That is pretty typical, especially if you do not have a girl friend. Many people that comment on the Catholic position on birth control are typically the married ones, who have many years of responsible parenting left for their already born children.

  • @100PercentCatholic A better job in this bad economy? I think God is putting up alot of obstacles!

  • @mylittlekittens Proverbs 3:5 - “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, on your own intelligence rely not.” You seem to be having trouble doing that. Would God not provide somehow? Is coming down from the sky the only way he can provide? Could he not bless you with a better job so you can afford day care? How could any Christian say they put their faith in God EXCEPT when it comes to fertility? There are no exception clauses. You either have faith in God or u don't. I'm a guy btw.

  • @100PercentCatholic I was raised Catholic. I would not endorse something that I did not actually use, for instance NFP, to someone whose life depended on it. Many people cannot physically survive leaving their chances of getting in the family way of to God's will. God does not come out of the sky when one needs emergency child care. Are you a guy?

  • @mylittlekittens I am not married so I live a celibate life. But when I am married I will definitely use NFP. Are you Catholic or another Christian denomination?

  • @100PercentCatholic Do you use NFP?

  • @100PercentCatholic NFP plus condoms can surely decrease fertility. They can break, but frequently do not. Makes a relationship less like Russian Roulette when one can possibly conceive a child unintentionally, effecting ones emotional health and long term survival.

  • @mylittlekittens What if condoms are used incorrectly? The only form of birth control that works 100% of the time is abstinence. That is why you have to put your complete faith in God that he would never give you anything that you can't handle.
