That's a cool sound. I have a TC49A in my upstairs hallway. I tested it the other day, and i hear that the tones are different, but the horns are the same.

I've seen and heard that smoke detector! The cover broke off when we took the battery out because the cabin was filled with smoke from cooking. I would have gotten it, but the cover was fixed.

The second one uses the squealer horn.

Hey there's a TC49A for sale on Ebay now. It's the wall mounted version, looks exactly like a thermostat but is a Smoke Detector. It's the hard wired model.

That's interesting as quite a few detectors around this same time still used Radium 226 as the source. Not only that but the dosages were much higher too sometimes as much as 5 Microcuries. Today the common dosage found in most units is 0.9 Microcuries.

One of my friends who goes to my church has this in their house.

Wow those are old alarms. My aunt had one of them in her house until very recently. She threw it out though. Darn as it would have made a nice collectors item. It is also amazing how small smoke alarms have gotten over the years in comparsion to these ones.

Regarding the radiation source on these 2 models, Am.241 or Ra.226?

That'd take a long time. Also some are on duty, protecting people as we speak.
