Not sure how many are familiar with it, but terragen can be used to create the terrain maps as well as preview them in 3D before grabbing the greyscale image (Old habit, I call it a bump map) and using it as the height map in Daz. Terragen is for both mac and PC, also it's free for personal use, may help a few out who try this.

I plan on fiddling with Blender in February. I have the month off, so I'm hoping to get some of the basics down before I have to go back to work.

there's youtube user super3boy who made a long series of videotutorials. since there were substantial changes to blender in the recent months, i think he re-made the introduction tutorials
