STRIKE 30th JUNE- SEE BELOW www.defendtherighttoprotest.org
Defend the right to protest -- Drop the charges -- Full independent investigation into SOAS arrests now!
On late Monday afternoon, a hundred students and staff from SOAS and the University of London assembled to protest against Universities Minister David Willetts' visit to the college.
In order to avoid a repetition of what happened to A.C. Grayling's lecture at Foyles bookstore, or Richard Dawkins at the Institute of Education SOAS management had not listed the event on its website. In addition, SOAS management flouted the fact that both the Students' Union and UCU at SOAS have voted motions of no confidence in David Willetts. Instead they invited the police onto college grounds to guard the door to the Brunel Gallery.

Asserting their democratic right to protest, students and staff entered the building and occupied the foyer of the lecture hall in which Willetts was speaking. Once the occupation had ended the police arrested a student, and went over to arrest three more.
Police were using batons, they erected metal barriers outside the Brunel Gallery and one plain clothes police officer was spotted giving hand signals to the police. The police's actions were provocative, violent and turned a good-natured protest into a scene of mayhem.

The events of 13th June 2011 are indeed worrying as they show once again the brutal methods the police will employ in order to quell dissent on the streets and on our campuses. It seems that now, every time the students' and trade union movement calls a protest, the police abuse their powers to intimidate and attack people taking part.
On JUNE 30, up to one million public sector workers will be striking in defence of their pensions and livelihoods. Yesterday's attacks on our right to protest resemble the arrests before the Royal Wedding and in the run-up to March 26.
We pledge to defend and assert our right to protest, and demand
- SOAS management instigate a full independent investigation with the involvement of student and staff from the college into what happened at the demonstration

- the police drop all charges against the arrested protesters

- An end to political policing

Students and workers today 13TH JUNE 2011 protested against University Minister, David Willets, at SOAS, where he was due to deliver a speech that had not been advertised.

A large number of students and staff protested outside, and about 30 gained access to the foyer of the lecture theatre where they began chanting against education cuts. Some protestors were thrown down the stairs, and many more to the ground by police and security. Outside, several protestors were arrested and violently wrestled to the ground.

These peaceful protestors have been to Holborn and Albany Street Police Stations.

A large solidarity demonstration is happening outside the Holborn Police Station on Lambs Conduit St.

  • @BeautyHealthZoneBlog Good for you! Many people are SICK of this BS. It's true that many politiians families have 'titles', many went to private schools & never struggled to pay a bill in their life paid their life. They truly do not give a damn about our problems, have no conception of how it even feels in our situation & do NOT want to know

30th June, 1pm @Parliament Square, London - will be a PEOPLES ASSEMBLY where every voice counts equally -100s of 1000s will be on STRIKE! JOIN US!

  • @IdaSputum

Yes, that is especially true. Also, a lot of the politicians have rich parents, so if they went to a posh college/University, their parents paid, even if it meant they slept all day in bed.

The problem is these people can't relate to REAL people, because they have never leave a REAL life.

Forget paying £27,000 for some worthless degree. Scam of the century or is it millenium.

DEBT = SLAVERY. STUDENT LOAN = SLAVERY. IMF = SLAVERY

Personally, I'm fed up and I'm saying my piece.

  • @BeautyHealthZoneBlog - yes... especially when 99.9% politicians got THEIR degrees when they were FREE

  • Correct....There is NO WAY in the world that I would pay £27,000 for some useless degree, and I have one so I know.....No way EVER!!!

  • @indibabs122275 Cheers Barbara. People RISE! Take care, Ida xx

  • Awesome Ida! All over the globe we are starting to stand. Hell is coming. Glad to see you are still here. God bless you and if I hadn't been so busy I could have written you some. I keep getting ready to but then life calls and tells me to get back to it. LOL.

    Have a great Tuesday!

    Barbara ;-)
