FOOTAGE TAKEN ON 3/11/11. ONE DAY AFTER THE 8.9 EARTHQUAKE OF JAPAN.
MIKE & CATHY WENT TO CHECK OUT A MINI TSUNAMI DOWN AT THE OCEAN LESS THAN A MILE FROM THEIR HOME. THIS WAS ONE OF A SERIES OF SMALL SURGES THAT DAY. THE LARGER WAVES HAD COME DURING THE NIGHT IN WHICH WE EVACUATED TO HIGHER GROUND.
HOW AMAZING TO SEE HOW FAST THE OCEAN RECEDES & RETURNS BACK TO THE BEACHES OF KIHEI. SOME AREAS HAD MINOR DAMAGE.
WE CONSIDER OURSELVES VERY LUCKY THIS WASN'T A LOT WORSE.

  • I had no idea anything even hit until I went to Foodland the next day and S Kihei Rd was full of corals and puddles..

  • I went across the street in the morning to Napili Bay, and watched the reef stick out like I've never seen it that low before, and within a matter of minutes the ocean would come back and cover the whole reef like triple high tide. It was kinda freaky and cool at the same time. I watched it do that 5 or 6 times, each time was more extreme than the last. Thank God it wasn't worse, poor Japanese

  • man id be there with metal detector

  • I am from wailuku and I found your video...awesome footage! Yes we should be very grateful that it wasn't alot worse.

  • Nice footage. That doesn't look anything like the beach I remember. Freaky!
