If you want to ride throu sand,lower your psi on your tires and cross the sand a little bit faster ,your gs will float over it.
I have more then 10 years experience on different GS.If you have any question i will answer you and give a few tips when riding these monsters.
I love my Gs 800 best bike in the world.

I'm sure that there is a reason BMW does dry over wet, but as much as you have to feather those pigs, you'll burn the clutch fast.

Yeah. I think the attitude you have to take is .. f'it. Smoke that clutch.
I ride the clutch all day on my F650gs. I think the reality is that most bigGS riders aren't as hardcore as you, so it is only an issue sitting in stop/go traffic, not pushing your pig through sand.
What kind of tires were you running?
