I didn't know this was ever a tv series, I only know the radio show, but I see that kept the theme music. BTW thanks bagend, I wasn't aware of Donna Diana, I'm looking it up.
Believe it or not, this originally aired in prime-time [7:30-8pm(et)] on CBS' Thursday night schedule from 1955 through '58 (for sponsor Quaker Oats, who sustained the original radio show from 1947 through '55). However, it was initially telecast in black and white. It wasn't until NBC rebroadcast the series on Saturday afternoons [12-12:30pm(et)] in 1963-'64 that the color prints were finally seen.
Wow! Thanks for this- I loved it as a kid and I WAS Sargent Preston (well, in my 7 year old mind anyway) and loved the music- (Overture from Donna Diana) so many of us from these years got our first taste of classical music from the cartoons and programmes like this ie william Tell Overture from Lone Ranger.
I used to watch it as a kid in the mid 50s, on Saturday morning...in black and white. This is the first time I've ever seen it in color!

Really too bad the fun and innocence of a show like this could never make it in today's culture.
