This is not informative, but rather a thinly-disguised ad for repair magnets and the types of shellac Stew-Mac sells.

its my understanding finished can affect tone ... how would this do?

I'm experimenting with the Shellac flakes I purchased from Stew Mac and attempting my first French Polish; so far so good! High quality flakes that dissolve readily in alcohol (Everclear in this case), and keep nicely.

I love Dan's books but don't think this video explains French polishing well. At the end of the video Dan says you need to use oil when French polishing, but the use of oil is not shown. Also, why add both alcohol and shellac to the pad? Easier to mix the correct cut of shellac to begin with. Finally, I don't think cotton balls are ideal for the inside of the pad. They tend to get crushed and not hold shellac well as pressure is applied to the pad.
