While some may criticise Pollini for lack of expression and such, for me he remains one of the ultimate references in terms of fidelity to the score and perfect technique. I think he is one of the stars at the sky above the seas of piano interpretations a voyager has to point his sextant at. One does not have to copy his interpretation, but one should know it for orientation purposes.

To me, this is a fantastic interpretation and the only one I know so far which actually comes close to Chopin's prescribed tempo, which is MM = 50 for one half of a bar.

This is the way Chopin wanted it played....fast with some rubato...not syrupy, slow or sentimental. It's not a piece where the pianist and the audience is supposed to swoon. Pollini has the right amount of musical expression. When I watch a good pianist play, I listen, and watch the hands and not concentrate of facial expressions. Some pianists out there, admittedly, great, are drama queens....so distracting....

The mm would normally be measured in beats per minute. So if by "MM = 50 for one half of a bar" you mean there are supposed to be 50 half bars per minute then the 78 bars of this piece should take 78*2 /50 minutes or 3 Mins and 7 secs. But Pollini here takes 4 mins and 13secs which isn't very close! Difficult to imagine playing it 25% quicker! - perhaps I've misunderstood your remark?
