  • if you do some deep Internet searching, you'll find linguists discussing how up until the beginnings of the 20th century, women's names ending with the "ia" combination were pronounced with a long i. Later, with an influx of Latin and Romance language speaking people, those names dropped their accent over the i and the "ee-uh" pronounciation became more common. "Maria" is the traditional spelling. "Mariah" is a variant (which just happens to be more common right now.) BOTH are correct.

  • @SullivanMaria Which is right or which is wrong doesn't really mean a thing . In this debate that has been raging since I posted this song is not right from wrong. But the fact that the writers of a song can name it what they please. The writers, Alan J Lerner and Frederick, wrote a song in 1951 and gave it the name "THEY CALL THE WIND MARIA" not Mariah.

  • I think I like every version of Maria, this is one of the better ones, favorite is Frankie laine---thanks for posting-never head it before

  • @studeystudebaker50 You should know by now that I'm about the biggest Frankie Laine Fan around and if he had sung this song 40 years ago I would agree that his would have been the best. But his version was good but this is a young mans song.

And like you I don't think I have heard a bad version of the song.

  • There have been maybe a dozen great singers over the years. Eddie was number one, you can argue how the other 11 should be slotted.

  • @CarlDuke Yes, Eddie was a great singer it was his personal life that did him in. But I think there were more than a dozen great singers some never made the big name for themselves. But you could get a dozen people in a room and they would all have a different opinion on who would be #1. It's all a matter of personal taste. For me it would be Frankie Laine, but that's just me. I know many Tony Bennett fans who think he's the greatest.

  • Thanks for this....My favorite singer...especially at this point in his career in the 196o's when his voice matured and deepened from his early tenor.

  • It's true that everyone has their own opinion. For myself it was Perry Como and Nat "King" Cole. They were always on top of my list. However as for greatness...let us hear it for Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. That is talent.

  • Racherry, just read your response to Eddie Fisher's They Call the Wind Maria, and I agree that he never did get the recognition he deserved as a performer. He was the best. I also love Milk & Honey, but I have every song he ever recorded and tapes of his live shows, and they are all my favorites. Eddie's music plays every day in my house.

  • i always liked this version the best. Sam Cook did a good one too but Eddie is the best for sure

  • the words are wrong and you spell mariah with an h at the end so it looks like this mariah

  • There may be names for the rain, the wind and the fire, but there is surely only one name for thee singer-----Eddie Fisher. The loss to those who love to listen to great singing is immense.
