A haematologist describes the process of giving blood and the reasons why people may need a blood transfusion. She also explains how the blood is tested to reduce the risk of infection.
Yes, you may only use this "cannula" on one patient and only once, then its thrown away. No way it would ever come in contact with two patients! The machine is probably a blood warmer, heating the blood so that the transfusion can be done more rapidly. It does not come in contact with the blood in any way.
The tests to make sure the blood is safe are rigourous! And it is always possible to track the blood, down to the very person who donated it.
when I hear about blood transfusions I am not very confident should one day need to borrow blood.. For example: does this "cannula" plastic duct is replaced for each patient? Does that machine come in contact with the blood liquid, I mean does the blood pass through it, get filtered or make contact with it? Does the blood get checked for viruses before being given out and are these checks recorded and responsibilities tracked in case of non-compliance or human mistakes?
