Recorded on January 2nd 1947 with the Philharmonia Orchestra conductor Lawrence Collingwood

Dennis Brain displays grace and delicacy in accompanying soprano Joan Cross (1900 - 1993) in Fiordiligi's aria 'Per pietà' in Act II of Cosi Fan Tutte. Joan Cross had been a successful leading soprano at London's Saddlers Wells Theatre, a company she had directed during the war years. The last ten years of her singing career she was associated with the operas of Benjamin Britten starting with "Peter Grimes" in 1945.

  • There are very few recordings of Joan Cross, for although she lived a long life her time as a professional singer was short.

  • Joan Cross who? Dennis Brain!!!

  • Wow. The legendary Joan Cross! The first Ellen Orford ever in Peter Grimes! Do you have any recording with her from this Britten opera? (or any other Britten recording.)
