The Movie "Hotaru" Kamikaze Pilots from Chiran 知覧特攻平和会館

Clip from the movie "Hotaru," starring Ken Takakura. This is a short clip of the Chiran Special Attack Forces' Peace Museum in the town of Chiran in Kagoshima.

The Special Attack Forces, known as "Kamikaze" in the West (God knows why) are called "tokkou" in Japan, which means, "Special Attack."

Chiran is a small town in Kagoshima Prefecture. This town was the host to the airfield which holds the record of having the largest number of pilots in the entire Japanese Empire where Special Attack Forces (so called "Kamikaze") flew off from.

Unknown to many in the world, many men of Korean, Taiwanese, and Chinese descent died as "Kamikaze" pilots.

This movie is about the main character (an ex-pilot who survived the war) returning his Korean friend's (who died as a Kamikaze pilot) belongings to the friend's family in Korea.

I went to Japan a few years back and I visited a WWII museam. They had thousands of letters written by kamikaze pilots before they were sent off. Most of them were written to their loved ones. I shed tears just from reading them.

As an American with Japanese samurai family backround, I had a chance to be assigned at Kunsan AB, ROK for USAF during 1981-2. There I made many Korean friends, exchanged many stories and helped heal many wounds between our cultures.

One time when I was riding the bus to Osan, a very pretty Korean bus conductor girl talked to me for nearly 30 minutes before she found out that I can't speak Korean. We laughed and became friends anyway. I'e been a fan of Korea ever since.
