At times, the English dub matches the mouths so perfectly, it seems that it was filmed in English!

In 1967 I saw Eric Porter perform Faust at the RSC, Stratford on Avon. One of the best theatre performances that I have ever seen and until I saw this version in the90s the best version of Faust that I had ever seen. Well worth seeing the entire performance if you can find it. I have the DVD released by Kino about a decade later, fortunately. A shame that it is no longer available new.

@theaznfishy I was under the impression that it was supposed to be the demon harassing the magician

@karler There's very little information about it on the internet. Wikipedia and imdb simply said he died 9/20/94, and I noticed that was ten days after the release of the film.

@Fma1416 This is the first time i heard of this. What was the cause of death?

It's God trying to stop him from completing the incantation.
very unfortunate this film has been discontinued. hopefully there are plans to release a special edition or at least just re-release the damn thing. jan is incredible and should not be swept under a rug by worthless mundane cinematography or hanna montana

This is, without a doubt, one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE interpretations captured on film. I am so grateful for this...Thank you Mr. Svankmajer for this exquisite work of art.
