@anthonynewsome I meant the other way round , Durans obvious heroes were Japan at some point , and the drums to Rio have to be a nod to Japan ,

wonderful- you dont get musicians that are prepared to take chances and make the type of music that they want to now- just manufactured xfactor style rubbish!

Why?
Duran and Spandau were famous before Japan were. They only really got fame through their Tin Drum album which was 1982. Polaroids and Quiet life were never hit albums and everything before that isn't worth talking about really. Although Obscure alternatives had a few good tracks on it it was really a transitional album for Japan to what they were about to become. Polaroids and Quiet life sold more AFTER Tin drum was released to critical acclaim.

I hear what you're saying friend but I just think Japan were the originals and the others are just poor imitations. Look at how Nick Rhodes of Duran copied Sylvians look for instance! I agree with you over your views onQuiet Life... The early glam rock Japan and the later new romantic icons Japan could be two different bands if you didn't know who they were.

Oh, yes i totally agree with you on that, they were there at the beginning, and were definatlely the best of all the new romantic bands taking cool to a new level really, more Roxy than new romantic, and Nick Rhodes did want to be David. Spandau and Duran were both really very good pop bands that had a platform to get noticed, although really it was Spandau that created that platform along with Visage. Although Japan were known as a new romantic band, they really were just out on their own.
