Murky but mellifluous footage of a bell wheel, invented by universal scholar Athanasius Kircher (1601-1680), The Last Man Who Knew Everything. Along with magnetism, mathematics, linguistics, optics, mineralogy, physics, hieroglyphs and the search for cultural origins, Kircher was obsessed with acoustics and the study of music. Several museums of the esoteric across the world carry reproductions of acoustical and musical devices Kircher designed, including automata, megaphones, even a primitive mechanical computer that could compose tunes from preset rhythms and patterns.
