Bill was fortunate to be able to purchase these 120 Chestnut logs and save them from being destroyed. Many of these old barns are just burned down when they are no longer wanted or when they start to fall into bad repair. This part of Appalachia is know for its early settlers in the 17&1800's building 1000's of cabins and barn out of the Chestnut tree. Early in the 20th century, chestnut blight destroyed about four billion American chestnut trees and reduced the most important tree throughout the East Coast to an insignificant presence..
