No excuse for her mother to sell her. I don't care if her family was so poor that they had to eat dirt. Don't have children if have to resort to selling them.

You have to try and see life from their eyes, in Chinese culture, poverty was so bad for the poor, they would literally starve to death if they didn't work like a mule. Charity was non-existent. If Things got so bad that the parents can no longer feed their children to keep them alive, slavery into a "Wealthy" family was a better option for their children. To a mother, she would sacrifice never seeing her child again, so that her child can live on. She suffered as much as the child.
