In this video you can see a cool trick to quickly adjust the brightness from almost any screen without the need for a widget or going to the settings or the need to root the phone. The phone used in this video is the Sprint Samsung Galaxy SII (aka Epic 4g Touch) but should work with all variations made by Verizon, AT&T, a T-Mobile because it is a feature of the TouchWiz interface. Rooting phone not necessary!

Just a quick question...
Is your phone rooted by any chance? I ask only because, there a a few custom ROMs available that not only have a brightness widget in the notification area, but also improve the overall performance of the phone. Not that this phone needs any boost in its performance..
Don't know if you're familiar with the XDA Forums. The link below. has all kinds of information regarding your phone.

@SHEIKHD7 I have not rooted this phone yet because I'm waiting to see if Samsung will push out an ICS update once the Galaxy Nexus gets released.
And yes, I am familiar with XDA Forums and have much love and respect for the devs there! CyanogenMod helped keep my aging Sprint Hero alive long after HTC quit pushing out updates. I do miss the ability to chose which widgets (like brightness) I wanted it in the notification bar. Thanks for the link, hopefully it will help others here as well!
