I love chess, but I just can't get into the Chessmaster games, mostly for the same issues you mention in this video.

...which is a shame, because I really like the simple, clean look of the menus in this version, and that Famous Games section just looks awesome. Oh well.

Yeah, it really does seem to have so much going for it, it could have been such a great game.

I have this game as well, and I agree with some of the issues you've brought up. The navigation interface also leaves a lot to be desired. Josh Waitzkin's tutorials are excellent, though.

BTW, I think the reason that the little girl AI moves so quickly is because that particular tournament is the easiest difficulty. So the AI isn't calculating too much -- if at all -- and is only making haphazard moves. If you play in the tougher tournaments, the AI ramps up and indeed takes its time.

Thanks for letting me know. Also, I agree with you about the navigation interface, I struggled quite a lot with it at first.

The game of kings did not port well to ps2, perhaps the product designers did not understand the game. The earlier versions of chessmaster (i.e. chessmaster 9000 on the pc) were actually much better for chess players. There are internet websites, including chess.com, chesscube, ICC etc that have much more to offer (mostly 2D). In fact becoming a real FIDE grandmaster is almost as difficult as studying for a pHD if not harder.

I believe if you pass certain levels in the tutorial, you unlock more computer characters. I unlocked the God of chess but there are still some blank character boxes . Does anybody know how to unlock all the players?

i watched a com vs com on chessmaster and they did 120 moves each and both of there timers only went down by 5 seconds!
