Female genital mutilation, or FGM, is a traditional practice that is performed throughout the Horn of Africa and other parts of the continent. The procedure is often called female circumcision, and it is illegal but still common in the self-declared republic of Somaliland, where health care workers, activists and others are working to end it.
@TheShirlock What does this have to do with Islam?

there is no such thing as male genital mutilation; yes, the foreskin is cut off, but that does not affect the functionality of the sexual organ or the ability to ejaculate; some men even prefer being circumcised; females on the other hand have their entire genitalia removed preventing any pleasure from sex and causing pain; imagine being cut open on your wedding night so your husband can force himself on you to consummate the marriage; it's most similar to half the penis being cut off

@JasonDamisch
Female genital mutilation has nothing to do with Islam. There is nothing in the Koran that says it must be done. Infact FGM predates Islam. FGM is also done in many non islamic countries, like in parts of Christian Africa. Its an ancient tradition that has nothing to do with Christianity, Judaism or Islam. In Islam it only calls for the Male circumcism, not the female, same thing in Judaism.

@maybetuesday1790 No, FGM in African expresses male desire for paternal certainty as well as female genital cleanliness. This is a near exact mirror for male-only circumcision in the US. Of course, you're a woman, so you have never been told that your uncircumcised genitals are ugly and dirty, right? Oh, you have? Perhaps a female clitoral hood amputation would help gain acceptance of your genitals from your male sexual partner.

@maybetuesday1790 Most American women believe that male, but not female, circumcision is an acceptable surgery. So, this is the perfect forum to end circumcision at home as well as in a far away land.

Vote for the ban on male circumcision in the US when it arrives in your city. A 1996 federal ban on female, but not male, circumcision already exists.

Male circumcision still common in the United States with 1/3 of US infant boys subjected to genial crushing for 10 minutes with a Gomco screw clamp.
If you want to understand the cultural forces behind circumcision, look at the US.
