In this http://www.artistshousemusic.org clip, Doug Maxwell is a producer and founder of Media Right Productions. He discusses the changing roles of a producer. He covers the different types of artists he works with and how that determines his duties as a producer.
This is very helpful and so true. Thanks!

I think right now a lot of people hear the term "hit" and they think" catchy", "pop", or "Whatever sound is in style". So when I say "Not just to make hits" I'm saying not to just copy and become repetitive and formulaic. There are plenty of ways to make a "hit" without being a facsimile. I think a skilled producer can emulate as well as be original. So yes musicians need to make hits to make it in the industry, but in the end the listeners decide what is a hit and the industry responds.

I'm not knocking him, or you but your statement,
(people who want to do this as a profession, and NOT JUST TO ONLY MAKE HITS) The industry wants hit makers, this is there product if you and I cannot make hit records of songs they wont get placed, if they don't get placed and make it on the record we don't get paid, if that happens it will make it harder for us to continue to get opportunities in this business.

True, but in order to make CONSISTENT hits, you need to really know what you're doing. He's talking about the people who want to do this as a PROFESSION, and not just to only make hits.

Yadda Yadda, Yadda, As long as you write a hit song and record they will love you, no matter how you do it.

That was pretty redundant. It had nearly nothing to do with the changing role of the producer. If the roles are becoming blurred, as he briefly mentions, he should talk more about that.
Also, what kind of musicians is he working with that they are unable to play their own songs in a different key and tempo without the aid of technology?? You don't need technology to do that! A very basic (the most basic) understanding of music theory and a metronome would do fine.
