Most surface tests where the fireball touched the ground caused glass to form. The test mentioned here is probably Trinity, i.e. the first detonation. The Gadget was mounted on top of a tower and the fireball did indeed scorch the ground to a glass-like material.
This is typical for sand subjected to high temperatures: the silicon melts and forms glass.

Nice. Your dates are incorrect, The film was in production in 1953 and the footage you used is not of shot Harry, the bomb responsible for the contamination but a nice moody video.

Great clips, but the film, The Conqueror, was actually shot in the summer of 1954, not 1955. It was stuck in development hell for two years and finally released in 1956. I'm writing a book on the film.

And this is just one site. Think about all the other countries tests of nuclear weapons + Chernobyl.
Its going to take a while to get the natural balance back.

Cancer is also caused by smoking which can cause a number of cancers in its own right. After all back then it was hip to smoke remember. It be interesting to know which cancers were specifically due to radioactivity.

Interesting information. Get's you thinking.
