I searched R-Type vids out after I fired up MAMEUI today and played a bit. I can kill the level 1 and 3 bosses in no time flat, and know a way to kill the level 2 boss without moving, and indeed, I could walk away without worry of dying. I'm going to have to look up more vids of level play, because I've never known anyone who was as good as me at R-Type, but I knew they existed. I'm not even a shmup demi-god. Just a guy who's decent at them.
Kudos BGR-44. I have been in love with this game since I first laid eyes on it back in 1990-91 at a bowling alley. I even owned the machine at one point. I still have the game boards, but the cabinet fell apart after awhile from being moved a lot. I've never been able to pass level 7, specifically the spot where the 2 streams of enemies come from the roof gap (they make their appearance at 1:01 of this video). My friend and I absolutely could not figure out a way past this.
Going by the definition, yes, this makes it /not/ a "no item pickup" game. But I think you see what would continue to happen did you not get the Force drone and power-ups.
Besides, this is still *very* impressive gameplay, no?
I'm inclined to agree, though I cannot say for sure. I have a pretty fast hand myself, and can fire very fast, but not like he does in this video.
I have a method of moving my finger very rapidly that I figured out when fighting the Metroid Queen in Metroid II on the GB, allowed me to fire missiles insanely fast, but I'm not sure this method would work on arcade buttons, not to mention for the duration necessary in R-Type's levels.
@strangebeavis well it is cause there is no way defeating the endboss without the force -_-

either this guy is really good or the game was slowed down. Im pretty good but i dont think i would be able to control that speed so precisely.
