  • I love that book. The church finds everything offensive nowadays.

  • I'm a catholic with a strong faith, and I agree. It's true, and ridiculous. His Dark Materials is, in fact, my favorite book trilogy. One of the Church's purpose is to open people's minds, and I don't see why they let schools ban Pullman's books just because he's an atheist... it's true the trilogy has some upsetting things for believers in general, but I don't see the point in getting offended. It's just fiction! That's why so many people hate the church.

  • They say that the series is about killing God...it isn't! It's about killing someone posing as God! True God is very present in the books: DUST. Think about it, shapeless, conscious energy that created the universe, intelligent life, favors positive actions, ect... THAT is True God. God, the Universe, Source Energy, whatever you want to call it, it's all the same. Christians freak out too much just because somebody poses a new idea on things.

  • can we get a petition to have them continue with the films? i know the golden compass did well worldwide, just not as well in America. maybe if they knew how many people want to see the other two novels of the His Dark Materials made into films.

  • it's so great to see some of the people here are very open n diverse in their thinking...

  • The movie is offensive. Teaching people to defy authority and withdraw from morals? what is up with that? only true mature people can learn to be submissive and be guided by correct morals

  • lol

  • If you can't tell the difference between truth and fiction, then yeah, you def have a problem lol.

  • I agree with you. I am also a solid Christian, for my own reasons. I don't feel a need to justify my belief, or shoot other people down for not beleving; and His Dark Materials is my ultimate favourite book trilogy.

If people let the belief provided in a fantasy book take a hold of them, their own stupid fault.

And you're right, there's absolutely no reason for people being offended, no-one's making them read the books or watch the film. Everyone's free to make their own decisions.

  • Yeah, that's nonsense. I don't see why getting so offended by such things. I think everybody can think what they want about any religion, as long as nobody gets to extremes. I believe in freedom of speech and I also believe in censorship, although the latter is very rarely necessary... people just get paranoid.

  • Schools in my area are starting to ban books such as "The Tenth Circle" because certain parents believe that the books are inappropriate and undermine their Christian upbringing.

  • There are many reasons to be an atheist, and I forgot to mention that it was CATHOLIC schools the ones that banned the books. And yes, there's supposed to be a separation of church and state in the US (well, at least it's pretty separated from the Catholic church, although sometimes, some things seem pretty fanatical. For example, I live in the "Bible Belt" South and it sucks in some ways... I think fanaticism from any faith is equally wrong.)
