This is a great war film that was vastly overlooked. It is about life and death. If your looking for a "Saving Private Ryan" type World War 2 movie, this isn't it. This film also gives you a glimpse into how the stress of combat effects a soldier, psychologically. One example from this film is the American soldier who pulls the death out of the dead Japanese soldier's mouths, to get their Gold fillings. He clearly wasn't in his normal frame-of-mind while doing this. Great film !!

poetic and profound, yet way too drawn out. the first hour is spent with men walking through the jungle, NOTHING HAPPENS. I honestly almost stopped watching it. And then the constant flash backs with no apparent reason. I mean, if at least some character development was present, but no, all soldiers are shown as wimpy babies. The film would have been much more better had they cut it by at least 1 hour. Short and sweet would have gotten the message across much better.

This is maybe my favorite movie of all time. Film as poetry - beautiful, profound, deeply human, sad, but also inspiring. Unlike any other war film I've ever seen, because it's not just about explosions and gunfire, and it avoids the banalities of petty politics. Malick is a genius.
