IOCP surpasses 2008 FoodShare Month totals

After painting a somewhat bleak picture last week, Susan Fetterer of Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners reported this morning that IOCP has surpassed its combined food and cash donation total for for 2008 for Minnesota FoodShare Month.

As of this morning IOCP has received 39,705 pounds of food and cash donations totaling $23,960, with donations from Thursday and today not yet added into the total. The combined total of 63,665 will top last year's total of 66,261 when a check for $4,400 and the rest of the donations are added in.

With the IOCP Food Shelf seeing a usage increase of nearly 30 percent over last year and additional funding nearly impossible to come by, those dollars will even more important than normal, she said.

"Not only do we get that money donated by the community, but we'll get a percentage of funds sent directly to Minnesota FoodShare," Fetterer said. "With that money we can literally leverage eight to nine times in buying power at Second Harvest Heartland."

During March, Minnesota FoodShare gathered weekly reports from all food shelves participating in FoodShare Month about food and money received. At the end of the campaign, donations made directly to Minnesota FoodShare will be distributed to the food shelves based on a percentage of the overall totals they helped bring in. For 2009, Minnesota FoodShare has set a goal of raising 10 million combined pounds and dollars.
