Lucy Isabelle Marsh was born in Ithaca NY April 10, 1878. As a child she sang in choirs and as a young lady moved to Paris to study under Trabadello and Baldelli, returning to the United States to study further with John Walter Hall. She made her first and only appearance on an operatic stage as the Flower Maiden in Wagner's Parsifal during the Met's 1904-1905 season.
In 1907 and 1908 she recorded three sides for Columbia, moving to Victor in 1909, appearing prolifically for the label until the early 1930s. She and other artists are uncredited in ensemble work such as the Victor Light Opera Company, the Victor Opera Company, and the Trinitiy Choir. From 1927 to 1936 she also recorded children's records for Victor as Anna Howard.
The recording heard here is an electrical "remake" of a selection she originally recorded for the Victor Company in 1917.

  • Very beautiful. Lucy is my favorite of the sopranos who recorded in the acoustic years. This is the first time I have heard an electric recording by her and her voice has much warmth and beauty.
