Performed by Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney in the Ghost Theater Sequence of the film Babes on Broadway, 1941. Judy turned 19 as she began work on this film, which followed close on the heels of Life Begins for Andy Hardy.Judy had two hit songs from this film. "How About You," performed with Mickey Rooney, was nominated for the Best Song Academy Award for 1942. "F.D.R. Jones," performed solo, was also a hit. She recorded both songs for Decca, and performed them numerous times on radio.
This film has some interesting history:
It was Vincente Minnelli who scripted the "Ghost Theater" segment in which Mickey and Judy offer impressions of legendary stage favorites. Veteran vaudevillian Elsie Janis was employed to coach Mickey and Judy in the sequence. She was especially appreciative of Judy and later wrote, "She can be anything she wants to be, and it will be very interesting to watch her heart and head battle it out. The former is enormous - the latter is surprisingly small, considering the crowns and laurels it has to hold up. Judy has gone farther, faster than anyone I know - and she has not yet started."
This film features the screen debut of Margaret O'Brien. Also, Donna Reed made her screen debut as Jonesy's secretary.
Words and music by George M. Cohan.

  • I'm no major fan of Judy Garland or Mickey Rooney, but seeing how well their chemistry was, it would have been nice to see them together in more movies, especially their adult/grown-up years.

How come the idea of THEM marrying each other never came about? Felt like friends only?

  • I think I had read somewhere that she admitted to having a crush on him, but met an older man (can't remember who) and got over it. Sorry for the vagueness.

  • Judy was such a diva...

  • @OldieMusicMan

well Mickey never fooled around with men like her husband did

but then Judy and Vincette's daughter also married a gay man

  • @ladylights1999 No problem. Have a good day :)

  • @hjb103055 ohh well I always enjoy learning new fun trivia's especially on Mickey & Judy. I can't get enough info on them... read nearly all bio's on Judy all on Mickey. Thanks for the input & sorry for the misunderstanding.

  • @ladylights1999 I didn't misunderstand your conversation with OldieMusicMan. I just thought it was some fun trivia. I send it to you because you said something about them. I was only making conversation. That's all.

  • @hjb103055 I'm sorry you misunderstood my conversation w/ OldieMusicMan We were not discussing Ava Gardner or Mickey Rooney. I know that Mickey proposed to Ava Christmas eve 1941 & Married Jan 1942 not sure what that's got to do with how Artie Shaw hurt Judy Garland when he married Lana Turner on their first date in 1940. Judy was infatuated with him at that time & Artie said later he was to old to get involved w/ Judy romantically however Lana is only a year older than Judy.

  • @ladylights1999 This movie was made in 1941 and in 1945 Artie Shaw married Ava Gardner and they were married for 1 year. But, 3 years before that in 1942 Ava Gardner married Mickey Rooney and they were married for 1 year.

  • @bulson08 - I agree. I love Mickey Rooney but when it comes to Yankee Doodle Dandy, it belongs to James Cagney.

  • I personaly like James Cagney better singing this

  • @OldieMusicMan Artie Shaw, the bandleader. But then he up and married Lana Turner and broke her heart.
