Why attend a Job Fair?
You have heard of the job fairs with people wrapped around the block or you may have heard about job fairs where there are a lot of employers who are not actually hiring. Certainly that is true, especially when the job fair is being sponsored by a local politician or a big company that has a lot of temporary jobs.
But a professionally run job fair is a critical part of your job search strategy. Why then would you attend? Well obviously you would attend it to find a job. Certainly this is your chance to meet the employers. The employers who are at any really good job fair have jobs open. They pay to be there. They are taking time to be there. They are not wasting their money unless they really think that they can find good candidates.
So you want a good job fair that offers you the employers that are important to you. You need to look at the website of the company that's sponsoring the job fair to see what targets are there that are really important to you. The ones that you really meet in person and be prepared to, ask those employers some critical questions that are important to your job search.
This gives you a great chance to make a terrific first impression and find the connections to that job. But that's not the only reason to attend a Job Fair. You go to a job fair -- if you are smart -- you'll work on your networking while you are there. You meet people. You talk to the guy next to you at the coffee bar. You wait and talk to someone around you in line. You make connections. Those connections can help you with your own job search and with luck you can help them. That makes the connection much more human and real, and more likely to be long term value to both of you.
Finally you go to a Job Fair to get market information. Who is hiring? What kinds of position are open? What skills are really in demand? What are the keywords that you want to translate your resume into? What are the buzzwords that are being used right now to describe jobs that interest you?
So you should think of attending a job fair in terms of all of its benefits not simply as a way to find a job, although that's really important and very probable. But also as a way to make your job search more effective, and to make your knowledge increase so that you can present yourself as the best possible candidate for the types of positions and the types of organizations that you really want.
