@corb135 realistically a soldier like this would have been kicked out or repeated basic training long before graduation. Pyle was incapable of making it in the Corps, but some who enlist purposely fuck up to try and get themsleves kicked out. Mass punishment ensues, and those are the ones who get these "blanket parties' and rightfully so.
-
Blanket parties hurt like crazy, but Pyle deserved it for dragging his unit down like that. And I still can't believe that he broke down and shot the drill instructor after graduation.

@corb135 Finally, we just gave up and blanket partied his ass. He steadily straightened up within about a week. On graduation day we reflected upon this with him, and he told us something I would never forget - "I was fucking up on purpose. My parents basically forced me here. But that shit hurts man, and I didn't want to get nailed again."
I'm guessing he was always kind of a bad boy, and his parents sent him into the military to straighten him out.

@corb135 For the most part I agree with you, these blanket parties are madness. But it beats the hell out of taking the heat for someone who continually fucks up. When I was in Boot Camp, we had someone like Pvt. Pyle in our squad - he was constantly fucking up, and the DI (we call them Petty Officers in the Navy) did tell us that we would get in trouble if we didn't work to improve his performance. So we worked for two weeks trying to get him to improve his performance, and he didn't.

if i was pyle i would fucking cut off every dick of my comrades because of beating the shit out of me this hard. i suffer, they suffer harder. i m treated like a pussy, they r pussies.

Unfortunately, things like this happen in the military. In BCT, everybody is expected to act as one solid unit, those who deviate or can't catch on will drag down the entire platoon. What they did was completely wrong, but a last ditch effort to get Pyle to wake up.
Vincent D'Onofrio did such an amazing job in this movie, though. Especially from this scene on, when Pyle slowly begins suffering from a psychotic break.

This scene makes me cry every time I see it...

that would hurt like hell

This is what happens when shit goes to far. People are abused, they suffer. Instead of his teammates actively working to help improve him, they beat the shit out of him with soap. Those kinds of actions are only detrimental to society, and are a leading reason to suicide and murder. Full Metal Jacket very easily shows what happens when people break. They lose control, and there is no telling what might happen when they do.
