In the early 1960s, the Australian soprano Joan Sutherland emerged as an opera star of the first magnitude, setting new standards of vocal excellence in the bel canto repertoire that have yet to be matched. Fortunately, Miss Sutherland's American career included numerous television appearances. Here Dame Joan sings part of the Mad Scene from Lucia di Lammermoor.
Wow. This is a really excellent quality recording

@magicmonkichi Literally every video performance she ever gave, from her first Bell Telephone Hour performance to her retirement at Covent Garden, the claw was always there, be it on tv, in an opera, or concert. :D

Wonderfully amazing~! Thanks for all the Sutherland upgrades to the videos. This clip was one of my first exposures to Dame Joan and it still blows me away. Thanks for putting this up ^_^

Wonderful, as always! Her chest register is particularly lush and expressive here. And you just have to smile at the ever-present Sutherland "claw" clutching at that invisible necklace. :D Hey, at least she didn't constantly hug herself like Callas.
