With Photoshop CS5 came a lot of hype about the new "Content-Aware Fill" plugin, something GIMP (a free, open source image manipulation program) had implemented years before with the Resynthesizer plugin. In fact, there are videos that show GIMP + Resynthesizer performing the same edits as the acclaimed Content-Aware Fill feature: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2gonFtc1yc.

This is just another video demonstrating the usefulness of this plugin, in this case for editing text out of a photo, a time-consuming task, as anyone who has done it will testify. The great thing about this tool, as shown in the video, is how it reconstructs the texture and color based on surrounding pixels in corresponding parts of the image.

Here I'm running GIMP 2.6.8 on Linux Mint 9 (Isadora). Wallpaper credit: http://lostinephotography.blogspot.com/2007/11/flowers-from-past.html Cheers!

  • My understanding is that "Heal Selection" uses the Resynthesizer plugin, and is more reliable. I've found that, using one or the other of them, I can usually get the desired effect.

  • WOAH. THATS THE AWESOMEST TOOL EVER!

I'm so glad I found this video. Sure makes deleting texts easier. :D

  • Isn't resynthesizer broken for recent Gimp versions? It doesn't seem to work very well from what I've seen. The "Heal Selected" patch works great, but the resynthesize part seems not to work right. Is there something I don't know?
