I remember this vividly , but did'nt know it was so close to that song ,which I first heard a bit later in another ad for some Rock collection , like "45 Monster Hits on one LP" , OR WHATEVER..... My Brother was in several bands that did "Evil Ways" , but I only thought of the hook , not the melody or the Latin percussive sound, when thinking of the two.....It may have helped Santana more than hurt him , if younger people got turned on to the jingle , first.
Winchester never claimed it was a "cigarette", 'jw'. Note the announcer's blurb at the end: "Ain't no 'cigarette'...ain't no 'little cigar'...it's a whole 'nother smoke!". That's how manufacturer R.J. Reynolds got around the "cigarette ban" on commercials after 1971, because Winchester WAS a "little cigar". This ad definitely aired around the end of '72 and the beginning of '73 (see their concurrent print ads in magazines and newspapers at the time). Eventually, "little cigars" ads were banned.
Don't think so. Cigarette commercials were banned effective Jan. 2, 1971 and I remember watching a Winchester commercial with this jingle before the ban took effect.
Did the commercial inspire the Santana song (which seems to have come out several years after the commercial), or did someone else record evil ways and have both the cigarette and Santanna cover it?
@mlm0607 where can we see photos of him?

Michal Haynes is his name and he lives in Springhill, Louisiana as of today, 2010. Still just as goodlooking today as he was then.

LOL - the actual performers on the track were a famous band in their own right - and had just off a tour supporting Santana !!!
