Judging by the sarcasm in your response, you obviously have a high opinion of your own opinions. That makes one of you. Citing one example hardly proves your point. I was generalizing about the average boxer then vs now. Try reading with your nose pointed downward.
Before WWII, heavies as large as Willard, Baer, Firpo and Jeffries were nowhere near as common as in the past thirty years. Congratulations, however on reading one (two?) book (s) and remembering Willard's name. and size.
I recall reading a book called the Great Fights. In a chapter devoted to the first Clay/Liston fight, it read that Liston annihilated hulking (huge) Mike DeJohn. I had it in my mind that DeJohn had to be a giant. Then I found out that he was tall (6 foot 2) but fought between 200 and 210 pounds (!), a string bean by modern standards. This showed just how much larger heavies are today, although the weight is often fat carried by sluggish blimps who throw head shots, exhausting themselves.
george chuvalo said that the hardest punchers he ever fought were MIKE DE JOHN + GEORGE FOREMAN! he said DE JOHN'S NAME BEFORE FOREMAN'S.

Half-witted @sportshistorybuff doesn't know that Jack Dempsey won the heavyweight title from Jess Willard, who was 6' 6 1/2" tall and weighed 242.
sportshistorybuff needs to find some more competent "history" books.

George Chuvalo said DeJohn hit him harder than anybody else ever did. Remember Chuvalo fought Ali,Foreman,Quarry,Frazier and Cleveland Williams.
