Nice job John. I have loved this song since the first time I heard it on Steve's album so many years ago.

@coachlight21 Well, then you come by it honestly. : D

OK, what's the link to your dad so I can listen to his version?
Thanks for the nice comments -

Michael Peter Smith of Rogers Park Chicago wrote The Dutchman. He also wrote "Spoon River" which Steve Goodman recorded. I really like your version of The Dutchman. It would be great to get together and play music together. I live in Minnesota, though I'm from Chicago. I grew up with Steve Goodman's music. He was an incredible songwriter and performer, and I miss him.

I still think this is the best version of Michael Smith's song ever posted on youtube

Thanks, that's really appreciated. It's getting to be the time of year when I'll start posting more songs...any requests?

Oh, very well done, indeed! I was prepared to not like any cover of this song, but you've gently persuaded me otherwise. Thank You.

I was touched the first time I heard Steve Goodman sing this song (30+ years ago), and as I get older I am amazed at how it "fits"...

@coachlight21 Yes. I'd first heard it due to WGN Chicago morning DJ Bob Collins, who praised the song and then played it, some twenty years ago. Steve Goodman, who described his time at the Old Town School of Folk Music as (paraphrase) "a bunch of Jewish guys playing folk and the blues" is another treasure gone too soon.

Uncle Bobby was one of my favorites for the few years I lived on Howard Street...and I spent some time "hanging out" at the Earl of Old Town and Somebody Else's Troubles...ah, the good old days.....
