What if...we never heard of the genius of Delia Derbyshire, Peter Howell, or even Murray Gold. What if the Dr Who themes we all grew up to love were by different people. This is a video displaying how the released unofficial Doctor Who themes have changed throughout the decades.

This video is a sequel for all those wonderful people who loved my 'Ultimate Doctor Who title mix'. Almost all of the video is the same as the aforementioned title mix, but I tried to make it more interesting by including different material from the 1st and 2nd Dr's title sequence tests, and a different colour approach for the video's conclusion.

As I'm a fan of the Doctor Who theme as well as the programme, I often collect unofficial theme releases as well as the official ones. So I thought it would be fun to create a video showing the unofficial face and sound of Doctor Who through theme music covers by Compilation albums and Bands like Orbital, who are fans of the programme.

I've used ten different arrangements of the theme, looking for as many different variations as I could find. I'm aware there are a few more out there, a couple of which I have, but I tried to reflect the best ones in the video.

Hope you enjoy it!

P.S. There's been many requests as to what each theme version is, so I decided to permanently list them in the description here. They are as follows:

0:00-0:50 1st Dr - Dr. Who - Eric Winstone & His Orchestra

0:48-1:10 2nd Dr - Dr. Who - Don Harper's Homo Electronicus

1:10-2:35 3rd Dr - "Who is the Doctor" - Sung by Jon Pertwee, Theme performed by Rupert Hine

2:32-3:12 4th Dr - Dr. Who - Geoff Love & His Orchestra

3:10-4:04 late 4th Dr/5th Dr - Dr.Who: Cosmic Remix - Mankind

4:02-4:40 6th Dr - Doctor Who: Terror Version - Dominic Glynn

4:39-5:19 7th Dr - Doctorin' the TARDIS (Instrumental) - The Timelords/The KLF

5:07-6:14 8th Dr - Dr.Who - Mark Ayres

6:13-7:05 9th Dr - Dr.Who - The London Theatre Orchestra

7:03-8:16 10th Dr - Doctor? - Orbital

  • this is barry grays version, i got it on a 45 rpm record called 21st century themes.

  • @commanderkoenig This cover (the first one) did feature on a lot of generic Barry Gray albums between the 1960's and the 1990's, but I'm sure the actually track was done by Eric Winstone (and his Orchestra), recorded in 1964.
