That's not true at all about what led to modern art. It was about simplifying and flattening the plane which was an influenced from Japan. People were also learning about other cultures through photography. Freud had a huge influence on people about irrational desires. Dada was meant to be childish making fun of so called rational adults. Surrealism started from automatic writing and pictures drawn by soldiers. People were fascinated with motion pictures. Nothing to do with state indoctrination.

my stepfather told me at christmas this year about something his father told him about when he was in france fighting in the 1st world war...

he had to force the french to fight the germans by "pushing" them forward from behind with their bayonets on rifles....

i would assume from the way it was told to me that this was an order given to his entire "unit" ie the english where used push the french up out of the trenches into battle then follow on.....behind...government mind programming

The modernist fascination with irrationality has to do with Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis. There was a belief, particularly within surrealist groups, that traditional realism was really somehow a falsification of the world. Surrealist practiced what Breton called "psychic automatism", which is a style of recording thoughts pre-reflectively without moral/rational filtering. This is why we see irrationality embraced by many modernists. They were trying to record the subconscious mind.
