i am supposed to take comic books heroes so seriously as to mine them for meaning as this preacher does?

or i simply enjoy a work of fiction

Why do you think it's an either/or?

@georgiaissexay Must confess I have no idea what you're talking about here...

If you're really interested in Catholic theology, I would recommend the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

"Most of the time, Batman is intervening in violence that is already taking place" I don't think his saying that Batman started the violence just that you can't solve the problem of violence in it's own terms.

I can imagine Jesus having to deal with the Joker:

Jesus: Father forgive him, for he does not know what he does. (prays some more for Joker)

Joker: Why so serious? (then walks away to cause more chaos, death, and misery, unstoppable)

Yeah, but he does solve the problem and captures The Joker after kicking his ass.

"Rachel: You're not talking about justice. You're talking about revenge.

Bruce Wayne: Sometimes they're the same.

Rachel Dawes: No, they're never the same. Justice is about harmony. Revenge is about you making yourself feel better, which is why we have an impartial system."

The quote where Rachel explains the difference (Ps I didn't count backwards properly, so my part 1, 2, etc aren't correct)

I can't agree with you 100% on this. Firstly, you say that Batman is tainted, and he doesn't achieve good because he is driven my violence, revenge and danger due to his parents death. If you've seen Batman Begins, at first, he is driven by anger and revenge. He seeks to kill the criminal who killed his parents. There is a distinct change in the film, driven by the love interest Rachel, where Bruce learns that revenge and justice aren't the same thing.
