Some Important Pupils of Alexander Michalowski http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGk4TTAL4Vw This is the only Chopin Wanda Landowska ever recorded that I am aware of. Here Landowska, a pupil of a pupil of Chopin writes, "Chopin on a harpsichord? Do not be angry with me my pianist friends! And now let me tell you why I do this. The harpsichord, reservoir of sharp colors, flutes, strings, nasal oboes, bagpipes, contrabass, is the ideal instrument to render folk music".---- "It is important to be aware of the character of the mazurka to avoid turning it into an elegant salon piece, accented like a Viennese waltz." (How I wish some of the pianists before the public today, would read this last sentence.---- Beckmesser2)

  • Landowska had something few artists today seem to have: imagination

  • I wish she'd played it on a Pleyel PIANO!

  • ピアノじゃなくてチェンバロ(ハープシコード)ですよね?これはこれでいい感じですね

  • @ayso78 An insightful observation!

  • @soami2u Agreed! (:-D) And incredible musical authority! She makes this piece sound very convincing on her harpsichord. I've often wondered what some of Chopin's works would sound like when played on this instrument. Landowska was an iconoclast, too, and a genius.

  • Silly-

  • She certainly chose the right Chopin piece to play on the harpsichord, since the writing imitates bagpipes.

  • we lesser musicologists can take it that the greater hath spoken

  • chopin is for piano definitly! but I like it...

  • How fascinating to hear a Mazurka played on Landowska's massive, 'souped-up' harpsichord! I wonder how this piece might sound, say, on a Ruckers, also on a fortepiano! ^_^
