YDF APHA 14-18 Showmanship

My pattern from 4-5-08(Murphy's B-day!!!) I am happy in general. As always, I would change somethings. As you guys probably know, this isn't my best class so take it for what it is worth. We received a First and a Second! There was like eight in the class.

As always, if you have a question about this, I will try and answer it. Unlike trail, I can't answer every showmanship question, but I will try my best. Enjoy!!

How did you teach your horse to set up so nicely?

@StarBaywonder 15 minutes a day devoted to showmanship. Most of it was working the set-up. It is honestly nothing more than creating a routine and practicing it, a lot.

Omg he is soo cute!! Great Pattern! Also I had one question...how do you get him to back up quickly? My mare moves away when I go to back her up but when ever I increase my speed towards her she just ignores me! So then I went to a crop and tried hitting her in the chest but she just gets upset and the head and neck go up...I want her to quietly back up quickly...if that makes sense haha :)

@APHAPRINCESS12 It does make sense. She knows how to put her head down when you pull on the chain, correct? Assuming she does, start by pulling her head down while she backs up and the speed she does it now. When she can do that, gradually increase the speed while still maintaining a flat neck. Good luck!

I am just getting started in showmanship how to you get your horse to reaspond so quickly and crisp to everything

@aqhluvr101293 Repetition. The more confident your horse is with the maneuvers the more willing and comfortable s/he will be doing them. Therefore, they will perform them faster and crisper. Sometimes, however, I use a light tap with a crop when I am asking them for something and they are just not responding. Like I said though, repetition, if they know their job, they can do it better and it will show when you are in the ring. Good luck!

@APHAPRINCESS12 to were if u do it while shes standing, all she learns is to stand with head down,, wow thats alot hope this helps! if ya dont understand anything just ask!!!

@APHAPRINCESS12 my thumb and forefinger were i could add more and direct pressure until she gives me a correct response, to help with the head, i would put my lead and my left hand, and take my RIGHT hand and put next to her poll (were those pressure points are) and try as hard as you can to leave it in position, but wen she would raise her head higher then u wanted, u could just tap her ther and shell put her head, note- tap her while backing, cuz u want her to leanr to BACK wit the head down

@APHAPRINCESS12 wat u could also do.. wen i trained my aqha mare, id walk into her with my hands in normal position while showing showmanship..and with my left hand, i would line it up with her nose (were her pressure points-which are a couple inches above the nose) and with my hand clenched, if i was walking faster.my LEFT hand would come in contact with her nose.so then i would just keep walking letting my hand bump her in the pressure points, if she ignored, then i would switch to
